How Chiropractic Care Can Support Hormonal Balance for Men, Women, Teenagers, and Cancer Immunotherapy Patients

In our busy lives around Port Stephens, hormonal imbalances often fly under the radar—but they can quietly disrupt energy, mood, sleep, weight, and overall vitality.

From the hormonal shifts of puberty and menstrual cycles to the challenges of andropause, menopause, and even the side effects of advanced cancer treatments like immunotherapy, balance is key to feeling your best.

At Port Stephens Chiropractic & Yoga in Nelson Bay, Dr. Kevin Schwager takes a holistic, nervous-system-focused approach. Chiropractic care can optimise spinal alignment and nervous system function to help your body regulate itself more effectively.

The Nervous System–Hormone Connection

Your endocrine system (the glands that produce hormones like cortisol, thyroid hormones, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) is tightly controlled by your nervous system.

The hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain act as the “master regulators,” sending signals through the spinal cord and nerves to the thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, testes, and more.

Spinal misalignments can interfere with these nerve signals, especially in the upper neck (affecting the hypothalamus-pituitary axis) and mid-to-lower back (linked to reproductive and adrenal function).

Chiropractic adjustments gently correct these interferences, reduce chronic stress on the nervous system, and help lower excess cortisol—which often throws other hormones out of whack.

The result?

Better communication between brain and body, improved stress resilience, and support for natural hormonal rhythms.

For Women: Easing PMS, Menopause, and More

Women experience dramatic hormonal fluctuations throughout life—puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. Common complaints include painful periods, mood swings, fatigue, hot flushes, brain fog, chronic inflammation and sleep disruption.

Chiropractic care often helps by:

  • Reducing nerve interference to the reproductive organs (via lumbar and sacral adjustments)
  • Lowering stress hormones that exacerbate symptoms
  • Improving pelvic alignment and blood flow

Many women under regular care report lighter cramps, fewer headaches, more stable moods, and easier transitions through perimenopause and menopause. It can be an effective natural support.

For Men: Supporting Testosterone, Energy, and Vitality

Men aren’t immune to hormonal shifts. Declining testosterone (sometimes called andropause) can bring fatigue, reduced muscle mass, lower libido, mood changes, and stubborn weight gain—often worsened by stress, poor posture, and sedentary work or screen time.

Chiropractic adjustments may help by:

  • Enhancing nervous system signalling to the testes and adrenal glands
  • Reducing chronic stress and cortisol (which suppresses testosterone)
  • Improving sleep and recovery

Patients frequently notice better energy, sharper focus, and an overall sense of drive after consistent care.

For Teenagers: Navigating Puberty with Greater Ease

The teenage years bring rapid growth and massive hormonal surges—think acne, mood swings, irregular sleep, growth pains, and posture issues from heavy backpacks or endless screen time.

Chiropractic care supports teens by:

  • Keeping the nervous system clear so the body can better regulate growth and sex hormones
  • Addressing spinal stress from sports, slouching, or rapid growth spurts
  • Helping with associated headaches, back pain, and even concentration

Gentle, age-appropriate techniques make it safe and comfortable. Many parents tell us their teens are calmer, sleep better, and handle the emotional rollercoaster of adolescence more smoothly.

Support for Cancer Patients on Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a powerful cancer treatment, but it can trigger immune-related endocrine side effects in up to 10–30% of patients.

Common issues include thyroid dysfunction (hypo- or hyperthyroidism), hypophysitis (pituitary inflammation leading to multiple hormone deficiencies), adrenal insufficiency, and, less commonly, new-onset diabetes.

These can cause profound fatigue, mood changes, temperature dysregulation, and other challenges on top of the cancer journey.

Chiropractic care serves as a supportive, complementary therapy (always in close coordination with your oncology and endocrinology teams). Benefits we commonly see include:

  • Effective, drug-free pain relief and improved mobility
  • Reduced stress and anxiety through nervous system calming
  • Better sleep quality
  • Support for overall resilience and quality of life

Techniques are modified to be extremely gentle, and we work collaboratively to ensure safety—especially important with any bone metastases, recent surgery, or certain medications.

Patients often describe feeling more “in control” of their bodies and better able to tolerate treatment when their nervous system is supported.

Chronic Pain No More: Discover Chiropractic Solutions

As 2026 approaches, many set resolutions focused on health and time with loved ones. However, chronic pain can hinder these goals, affecting sleep, mood, and mobility. Chiropractic care offers a solution by addressing root causes of pain through targeted adjustments, promoting whole-body wellness and enhancing overall life quality.

Chiropractic Care: Helping Your Brain and Body Stay Sharp as You Age

Ever notice how a stiff back or neck can make everything feel a bit harder?

Maybe you’re waking up creaky, or you’re worried about staying active and independent as the years go by.

You’re not alone—lots of us want to keep moving freely, thinking clearly, and enjoying life without constant aches holding us back.

At Port Stephens Chiropractic, we see this every day.

Chiropractic isn’t about “fixing” everything magically—it’s about supporting your body’s natural ability to function well, especially when it comes to your spine, nervous system, and everyday mobility.

Dr Kevin yearly commitment to donating to our community in need.

Why Spinal Health Matters More Than You Might Think!

Your spine isn’t just bones—it’s the highway for your nervous system, carrying signals from your brain to every part of your body (and back again). When things get out of alignment from daily life, old injuries, or just time passing, it can create tension, reduce mobility, and even affect how comfortably you move or rest.

Regular Chiropractic Care can help restore better movement and alignment in the spine.

Studies show this can improve range of motion in your neck and lower back, making it easier to stay active—whether that’s gardening, playing with grandkids, or just walking the beach here in Port Stephens.

Feeling more mobile often means feeling more like yourself.

Supporting Your Nervous System for Better Overall Function

Think of your nervous system as the body’s communication network.

When spinal issues interfere with that flow, it can contribute to discomfort or fatigue. Chiropractic Care focuses on reducing that mechanical stress, which may help your nervous system work more smoothly.

Keeping Inflammation in Check (the Musculoskeletal Way)

Inflammation often shows up with joint stiffness, back pain, or those “I slept funny” days.

By improving how your joints and spine move, Chiropractic Care, can help reduce mechanical stress that fuels local inflammation in those areas. Evidence suggests spinal manipulation may lower certain inflammatory markers tied to musculoskeletal issues, which can mean less pain and better daily function.

Combining Chiropractic Care with good habits like movement and nutrition, and it’s a practical way to manage those nagging issues that come with aging.

Aging Well: Staying Independent and Enjoying Life

Here’s the real win—maintaining quality of life. As we get older, balance, posture, and flexibility can slip, making falls or inactivity a possibility. Chiropractic care helps address those age-related changes in the spine and joints, supporting better posture, mobility, and confidence in movement.

That activity loop is huge:

Move more ➡️ feel better ➡️ stay engaged with life.

It’s simple, but it adds up to more good days.

The Brain Connection: How Spinal Care Might Help Mental Clarity Too

Your brain and spine are deeply linked through the nervous system.

Emerging studies suggest that optimising spinal function can support things like neuroplasticity (your brain’s ability to adapt) and even stress management, which ties into feeling mentally sharp.

For example, reducing physical tension might ease anxiety levels or improve focus for some people.

Again, this is about supporting the body’s systems—not claiming to treat cognitive disorders—but it’s exciting how taking care of your spine can have ripple effects on how you feel overall.

If any of this resonates—maybe you’re tired of stiffness slowing you down or just want to age with more ease—come in for a chat and assessment. We’ll look at what’s going on with you specifically and see if Chiropractic Care fits into your plan.

No pressure, just honest support to help you keep doing what you love.

Take care,

Chronic Pain No More: Discover Chiropractic Solutions

As we welcome 2026, many of us are setting resolutions—eating better, exercising more, or spending quality time with loved ones. But for too many people in Port Stephens and beyond, chronic pain overshadows these goals. What starts as occasional discomfort can gradually become a daily reality we accept as “normal.”

We push through back pain during work, ignore neck stiffness from long hours at a desk, or dismiss headaches as just part of life.

Over time, this adaptation limits our enjoyment of the beautiful Port Stephens lifestyle—surfing at One Mile Beach, walking Tomaree, or simply playing with children and grandchildren.

Living with pain isn’t just uncomfortable; it affects everything. It disrupts sleep, increases stress, impacts mood, and reduces our ability to move freely. The body adapts by compensating—changing posture, avoiding activities, or relying on pain medication—which often worsens the underlying issue.

But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to stay this way. Chiropractic care offers evidence-based path to break the cycle and reclaim a pain-free life.

At Port Stephens Chiropractic & Yoga in Nelson Bay, I’ve seen this transformation countless times in my 37 years of practice. ~ Dr Kevin Schwager

Patients arrive resigned to their pain, only to discover that targeted chiropractic adjustments can potentially restore proper spinal alignment, reduce inflammation, and support the nervous system’s natural healing ability.

Chiropractic isn’t about masking symptoms; it’s about addressing root causes, like misalignments that interfere with nerve function and contribute to ongoing pain.

37 Years of Toys for Treatment: Dr. Kevin Schwager Joins ACA #Giving Back Week – Tuesday 2nd Dec 2025

As the festive lights twinkle brighter in Nelson Bay and the air fills with holiday cheer, it’s great to reflect on a tradition that’s warmed hearts in our Port Stephens community for nearly four decades and directly in Nelson Bay for 16 years!

For 37 years, our Toys for Treatment campaign has been a cornerstone of giving back. It transforms chiropractic visits into acts of kindness. These acts brighten the lives of local families in need.

A Legacy of Community Heart

It all started in 1988, long before our current Practice at Shop 11, Cascade Walk Arcade, 6 Stockton St, Nelson Bay NSW 2315 became a hub for spinal health and yoga rejuvenation.

Dr Kevin, a Chiropractor with over 37 years of evidence-based care, has always believed that true wellness extends beyond the adjustment table. That’s why, each December, patients trade the cost of their session for a new toy, gift voucher, or hamper item.

No cash or payments exchanged—just the simple power of sharing.

Over the years, this initiative has collected hundreds of gifts, partnering with local charities like Port Stephens Salvation Army and Private Campaigns to ensure every child, teenager and families in need experiences the magic of Christmas.

It’s not about the numbers; it’s about the stories—the single parent relieved by a stuffed bear for their little one, or the family basket that eases holiday pressures.

A small picture history of “Our Toys for Treatment”

In a world that can feel overwhelming, these small gestures remind us of our shared humanity.

Aligning with the Australian Chiropractic Association’s Giving Back Week

This year, like recent years, we’re thrilled to weave our tradition into something even bigger: the Australian Chiropractic Association’s (ACA) Giving Back Week (December 2-8, 2025).

As proud ACA members, we’re joining Chiropractors nationwide in a unified wave of generosity.

.The ACA’s initiative echoes our core values: promoting health, fostering community, and advocating for equitable care. By aligning Toys for Treatment with Giving Back, we’re not just donating toys—we’re building a stronger, more connected Port Stephens.

How You Can Join the Joy

  • For Patients: Book your adjustment or yoga session (Mon/Thu 2-7pm, Tue 8am-12pm) and bring a new toy or voucher in lieu of payment. It’s a win-win: you get personalized care, and our Community wins!
  • For the Community: Drop off donations anytime during hours—no appointment needed. Every item counts!

This holiday season, let’s keep the spirit of giving alive.

Dr Kevin, committed to supporting not just your physical health, but the well-being of our entire community.

Together, we’re making Christmas a little brighter—one toy at a time.

Wishing you health, harmony, and always great health,
